Mt. Wilson Observatory Residences

Fall 2025

Mt. Wilson Observatory is a campus of current and retired astronomical observatories at the top of Mt. Wilson, in Angeles National Forest. The scope of this project was to design a detached facility that included work spaces, scientist dormitories, and public outreach facilities. Extra considerations were included as a result of the site’s isolation, effecting material usage, site excavation and foundation limitations. The form of the project is derived from various gradient studies that reflect the site’s unique gradient boundaries between human and nature, clouds and tree-lines and public and private spaces. Structural solutions & materials were chosen for their ability to be transported through narrow and winding mountain roads.
Annotated Site Captures
images taken at the project site, shot on Ilford Delta 100 35mm film, and printed on glossy photo paper. Site overview is annotated with experiential and environmental observations.

Gradient Compositional Studies
2-dimensional gradient abstractions based on gradient realities visible on-site. Attention is given to derive spacial, relational and 3-dimensional qualities from each vignette.
